The IBC was founded by Abbe Kenshiro Sensei and is an umbrella organisation for Japanese Martial Arts. The IBC is one of the oldest Martial Arts organisations in the UK.
The organisation offers the protection, organisation and promotion of Martial Arts in a more expansive manner than many other organisations. Supporting not only the sporting aspirations of its members but also their individual emotional growth.
It is a large and continuously growing organisation, wit
h Martial Arts clubs throughout the UK and Europe, with whom we have affiliations.
If you are new to Martial Arts, young or old, please explore our site. It is our hope that through the information on this site, you will be able to discover which Martial Arts are right for you. Whether it be for self defence, sporting competition or individual physical and emotional growth.

IN MEMORIAM
It is with great sadness that I announce our loss of Eric Bartlett, 4th Dan, and Life Member of the IBC.
Eric lived a very long life, and many of his years were taken up with Judo. He started as a young man, in Wales, when training was difficult to acquire, and continued until he was in his eighties. He ran a club for very many years, until he felt that the children would be better served by younger people, but then he continued to practise Kata on a regular basis, right up until he had problems with his hands that prevented him taking a firm grip.
I first met Eric when I was a teenager, and during the years got to know a great deal about him. He was a man with very strong religious beliefs (a Quaker), and very strong left-wing beliefs. He once told me, with a great laugh, that his views were far too far to the left for him to be able to join the Communist Party. The thing that was really important about Eric was that he never diverted from his ethics. He was staunch, loyal and steadfast.
His manners were perfect, every letter answered by return of post, no thank you ever left unsaid, even for a day. He was so considerate to everyone around him at all times. I always wished that I could come close to following his example, but it was a really tough one to follow.
As will be known to many of our members, Eric was also an author or quite a number of books. One he had published on Judo used our members on the Hastings Easter Course for the photographs. We were, of course, thrilled that Eric should ask for our help in this way, but he went to great lengths to thank us for our help, and tried to give as many people who featured in the book as possible, a copy of the book.
When I first knew Eric he was a rather solitary person, rather shy, and always modest. Eric married rather later in life then most people, but had the great fortune to marry Pauline, with whom he had a very happy marriage.
Eric wrote many contributions to the IBC newsletter, which predated the web site, and gave his time and expertise freely and generously. We have lost a unique and wonderful person, but those of who knew him will always treasure his memory.
